Storing Filters After Use
Storing a Ceramic Camp Filter after Use
Using a ceramic water filter for the occasional camping trip is a great idea and protects campers from the little water-critters that could potentially make them sick. Collecting water from a woodland stream, lake or river is an adventure in itself and makes camping that much more fun – especially for the kids. In fact, they’ll be asking when the next camp-out will be.Buying a new filter for each trip can add up, so you may be wondering . . . Can I re-use my camp filter? The short answer is “Yes.” However, there are important steps that must be taken before storing a camp filter for re-use.Cleaning:If you have filtered water from a natural source, clean your bucket (see our link for buckets), then run some clean water through the filter. Remove and clean the filter cartridge with a soft cloth and clean water. A soft brush may be used instead to loosen and remove film or particles trapped in the pores of the ceramic filter.Shaking:Shake your filter cartridge to loosen the carbon inside the ceramic case. This will prevent packing.Drying:The ceramic filter must be completely dry before storing. This is essential. Sit the filter in sunlight for three or four days and let it dry. Once the filter is completely dry, inspect it for cracks or damage. If all is well, simply pack away your filter for the next trip. Remember that the ceramic filter case is somewhat fragile. Therefore, pack it well to protect it from damage. How Long Can I store My Camp Filter? As long as your filter is intact and put away dry, it can be stored indefinitely. The longevity and effectiveness of the filter is not diminished by storage.
