How To Maintain Your Filter
How to Maintain Your Ceramic Filter Cleaning the Ceramic Filter:Cleaning your ceramic filter is essential to maintaining both filtration efficiency and flow rate. Simply use previously filtered water, and a soft cloth or soft brush, to clean the exterior of the filter. This gentle cleaning releases dirt, dead bacteria and other organisms trapped in the pores of the surface. The frequency of cleaning will depend on the source of the water you filter. The more contaminated the water, the more frequently the ceramic filter element will need to be cleaned. You may notice a coating on the ceramic case known as biofilm. Biofilm is the nice name for slimy skuz. Get rid of it. Gloves?Think about what you are removing from your filter element during the process of cleaning and consider wearing disposable gloves. Otherwise, remember to wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning. Yuk! No Soap Please:Do not allow the ceramic filter case to make contact with detergents, soaps or any other cleaning agents. These substances will interfere with the efficiency of the filtration. Disturbing Observations:You may notice that the ceramic case seems to erode in the cleaning process. Do not panic! This is not a problem. It will not diminish the filter’s ability to do its job, nor will it compromise the effectiveness of the colloidal silver. Think of it as shedding dead skin cells. We shed dead skin cells everyday and our innards do not fall out. Although we replace those skin cells, you will not need to replace your ceramic filter until the carbon and resins are spent. Your ceramic case will outlast the magic that is taking place inside the case, and should survive up to 100 cleanings. In addition, the gradual erosion may improve your filtration by clearing the ceramic’s tiny pores. Shake It Up!While you are doing your maintenance, don’t forget to shake your filter cartridge. Periodic shaking helps prevent the carbon inside the case from packing. Packing will disrupt the flow of water through the filter and reduce the output of filtered water, referred to as flow rate. Cleaning Your Filtration Bucket:It makes sense to clean your filtration bucket when you clean your ceramic filter. Placing a clean filter in a dirty bucket would be like taking a bath before getting into muddy pond! Rinse the top bucket with clean water and then give it a good bath inside and out with a strong bleach solution. DO NOT USE SOAP! Don’t forget to disinfect the spigot while you are at it. Let the bucket air-dry in the sun if possible. The sun is nature’s UV treatment. Next, reassemble your water station and you’re ready to filter more water! Why Bother?Routine maintenance of your ceramic water filter system will help improve flow rate while prolonging the life of your filter.
